Francavilla al Mare... a bit of history
Francavilla al Mare lies between the mouths of the Alento river and the Foro river. The shallow and sandy beaches provide the ideal location amongst the 3 star hotels in Francavilla. The increasing amount of summer tourists has generated a turbulent growth of second homes, in fact the new part lies right by the sea therefore excluding the possibility of continuity as far as Pescara. The first historical notes on the city date back to the XIth - XIIth centuries. Various episodes took place in the city between the XIIIth and XVI th centuries when periods of prosperity alternated with periods of calamity caused by plagues (XIV th century) or Turkish invasions (XVI th century). From the XVII th century it became under the possession of the D'Avalos of Pescara and Vasto who kept it until the abolition of feudality. During the second world war the city was almost totally destroyed. From the past it has conserved the ruins of the church of San Giovanni of the XII th century, the Franciscan convent of the XIII th century, remains of the walls of the XIII thcentury, the convent of Santa Maria del Gesù, later becoming the residence of the artist F.P. Michetti andD’Annunzio’s last supper; of significant importance a monstrance, the work of Nicola da Guardiagrele, dating 1413.
